Maintaining a healthy diet is very important for those who have diabetes. Many people have different theories on what is the best diet, but generally, most people know what the few most effective for diabetics to control their calories. It is important to differentiate between diets for those with Type 1 diabetes, and those with Type 2 diabetes.
The diet that should be followed depends on the type of diabetes the person has. If they have Type 1 Diabetes, their diet should contain around 30 calories a day (per kilogram of the person’s weight). If we convert this to pounds, it is approximately 10 calories per pound of weight. Now for those with Type 2, it is quiet different. They are usually put on a diet from 1500 to 1800 calories (per day). This is done to help them lose weight (as people with Type 2 have harder time controlling weight).
There are others factors though aside from the type of diabetes they have. Some other factors include their sex, age, physical fitness level, height, weight, etc… So clearly, someone who is heavier will most likely need more calories than their counterpart who is lighter. Also, since physical activity burns calories, those with higher level of physical activity will most likely require more calories, and vice versa.
Many people with diabetes are not sure of their needs for a successful diet. For those individuals, it is best that you visit a doctor or dietitian. They will be able to tell you the exact amount of calories you should consume per day (based on varying factors mentioned before such as weight, age, sex, etc..). Many people overlook doing this, but clearly a doctor or dietitian can give you the best diet for you, and you will not regret it in the long run.
